In the 90s the german army looked for an all-terrain vehicle which can transport more than the Wolf. Another point was that it had to secure the crew from enemy fire like the older Fuchs. The result was easy and because oft that ingenious. A simple chassis of an Unimog 1550L by DaimlerChrysler with the assembly by Krauss-Maffei-Wegmann build the "Allschutz-Transportfahrzeug (ATF)" Dingo. The Dingo is build perfectly for todays dangers. The Dingo ist cheap in maintenance, has a high protection from mines, the modular concept and the ability to give support fire make the Dingo a good friend of the service maintenace and the infantry. The Dingo protects itself with a 7,62 mm MG3 or a 40 mm GMG, which is mounted on a gun carriage. The gun carriage can be fully operated from inside the vehicle. For the KFOR the Dingo 1 is a very important vehicle, what is the reason that it found its way into Operation Peacekeeper. With its 6 seats a complete squad can be moved quickly. Often one guy stays in the Dingo and provides supporting fire with the MG3 while the other teammates capture the enemy flag. |
